Claudy Woods is a photographer interested in exploring the relationship between sexuality and the Catholic faith. Specifically, she wants to investigate the shame that the teachings of the church have created for women. She grew up in a lapsed Irish catholic family on her Mum’s side. By the time she was born, no one in her extended family practised the faith, however, there has always been a sense of Catholic guilt and shame, especially during conversations revolving around sex and womanhood. She has always found it interesting how ingrained this sense of shame becomes even after leaving the church which is why she wants to explore it in her work. She feels she will have done her job if she can create some art which resonates with other young women struggling with this guilt. Sex should not be as taboo as it is in the 21st century and the church teachings do not align with the values of the modern woman.
